ISIS-inspired New Orleans terrorist Shamsud-Din Jabbar prepared a “very rare explosive compound” in the two homemade bombs he planned to detonate on Bourbon Street, police said.
Law enforcement is currently investigating how Jabbar, 42, managed to learn about the explosive chemicals, which officials said have never been used before in a terrorist attack in the US or Europe, NBC News report.
Officials did not state what the rare compound was or how they believe Jabbar was able to manufacture it in his Texas home, where he kept a bomb-making workbench.
Images of his workshop, exclusively obtained by The Post, showed a stash of chemical bottles and a long list of compounds used in bomb-making that were seized by the FBI.
The two IEDs that Jabbar prepared were planted in coolers near the scene of the deadly truck ramming that killed 14 people on New Year’s Day, and they were rigged with an electronic transmitter to signal detonation.
On Sunday, the FBI said that Jabbar was killed by cops before he could detonate the explosives.
Investigators also found bomb-making materials inside Jabbar’s AirBnB rental on Mandeville Street — which the terrorist tried to set ablaze “in his effort to destroy it and other evidence of his crime”, according to the FBI.
New Orleans has identified all but one of the victim’s identities. The publicly released names are: Brandon Taylor, 43; Elliot Wilkinson, 40; Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, 18; Tiger Bech, 28; Reggie Hunter, 37; Nicole Perez, 27; Kareem Badawi; Hubert Gauthreaux, 21; Matthew Tenedorio, 25; Drew Dauphin, 26; Billy DiMaio, 25; and Terrence Kennedy, 63.
About 30 people were injured and 16 remain hospitalized, half in the intensive care unit. Two officers were also wounded in the shootout with Jabbar.
The attack marks the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil in years, laying bare what federal officials have warned is a resurgent international terrorism threat.
As police investigate Jabbar’s homemade bombs, investigators are also looking to uncover his motives for the attack.
Officials said they found an ISIS flag in his truck, as well as Facebook videos posted prior to the attack where Jabbar proclaimed his support for the terrorist group.
