1 dead, 6 hurt in shooting at party for college-bound student in Mass.



One person was killed and six others wounded in an overnight shooting at a bon voyage party for a student about to leave for college in Lynn, Massachusetts, prosecutors said.


Shots targeting people at the party were fired from a vehicle in Lynn, officials said.

The shooter or shooters remain free.


The incident was first reported to police around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.


Police did not reveal the identity of the person who died, but a man at the scene, Brian Diaz, told NBC Boston it was his 25-year-old brother Abraham Diaz.


He said the shooting — which critically injured two — took place at a party to celebrate a friend graduating and going off to college.


“No family should have to suffer the loss of a loved one through circumstances like this,” Lynn Police Chief Christopher Reddy said at a news conference Saturday morning, according to the NBC Boston report.


Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said authorities confirmed the shots came from a vehicle and police “found a chaotic scene, ” USAToday reported. “This is a terrible act of violence that’s torn at the fabric of this neighborhood and this city,” he added.


Police at the scene were investigating a black SUV with shattered windows.


“This is absolutely outrageous, to have this level of violence happen in our streets and in our neighborhood,” fumed Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson, who also shared condolences for the victims and their families.


Lynn, with a population of around 100,000, is located about four miles north of the Boston city line.
